There is just under a month to go to the second Design Island exhibition at the Niland Gallery, Merchant's Road, Galway. At Irish Design Works 2016, we will present furniture pieces, lighting design, stone sculpture, ceramics, basket making, artworks and fine metalwork, all designed and hand built in Ireland. Design Island is a network group of designer makers and producers, initially formed in 2003 as the Cream of Irish Design and now named Design Island since 2005. We pool our resources to present exhibitions to promote the quality of design and craftsmanship in Ireland today.
In this 2016 edition we’re delighted to introduce new exhibitors to Design Island: Colin Grehan’s muscular stone sculptures, Shona Slemon’s natural layered forms, Joe Hogan, the master of woven willow and Sinead Cullen’s dynamic stroked artworks.
Just like 2015, Gabriel Furniture bring their excellent geometric experimentation in furniture. The Kildare brothers Sean and Tim at Dunleavy Bespoke produce luxurious contemporary furniture. Patricia Murphy brings her inspiring, highly coloured energy panels. Raymond Kinghan’s one-off signature pieces include a ceramic cannon. Stephen Quinn’s meandering forged steel work offers brilliantly interlaced and hot-worked detailing. Stephen O’Briain’s wonderful, organic sculpted furniture offers such sophistication. Daniel Gill’s knowledge of native materials and traditional cabinet making skills has led him to thrive in this exhibition forum. Finally our own work at Shane Holland Design is an experimental journey and a mix of furniture, lighting and sculptural pieces developed over the years.
All artists, makers and designers will be displaying a selection of new pieces. The exhibition runs during Galway International Arts Festival, so if in the area do pop in. Admission is free.
