Skerries Sea Pole Memorial
This project was a personal project developed through community interaction with a number of local stakeholders. We wished to restore and implement an old sea rescue pole as a sea memorial and we took charge of the poles restoration and development of memorial plates and information plaques to commemorate lives lost at sea locally in the Skerries and Loughshinny area of North County Dublin. In making the Stainless steel laser engraved plates a lot of local research had to be carried out to find out names of families, origins, boats... and intrigingly how the boat sank. In Sept 2013 President Micheal D. Higgins opened the Pole at a ceremony in the town, attended by local representatives,RNLI,Coast Guard, Air Corps, Navy and families and school children. This project required a huge amount of historical research into sea losses and represents the longest list of sea losses off the Irish Coast of many nationalities both colse to the shore and out to international waters.
